Phuket Aquarium Releases Endangered Shark Species
THAILAND TRAVEL NEWS: Sharks and swimmers are two topics that ordinarily don’t meld well together, however, holiday makers have nothing to fear from 39 sharks recently released into the sea off Phuket.
Bred by Phuket Aquarium, the sharks, known as Indonesian bamboo sharks or Indonesian speckled carpetsharks Hemiscyllium freycineti, are sluggish, nocturnal fish, that feed off bottom dwelling invertebrates and smaller fish.
Aged between three months and two years, the sharks, along with 199 clown fish, were released off Mai Ton Island on August 12 to celebrate the birthday of Her Royal Highness Queen Sirikit.
Dr Wannakiat Thubthimsang, director of the Phuket Marine Biological Centre (PMBC), said the sharks provided no danger to swimmers as they are a non-migratory species, but instead provide an indication of the seas fertility due to their diet.
He said the number of shark species in Thai waters has gradually declined, with only 30 shark species now being found in the Andaman sea, compared to nearly a hundred species previously.

Nine Temples Tour in Bangkok (Part 2)
After filling up energy, we are ready to move on the next destination, Chao Pho Sua Shrine (The Shrine of the Godfather Sua). The shrine is located on Tanao road in Thai-Chinese residential area. It is an old Taoist shrine which Thai-Chinese people regard as a must-visit for paying homage. Since the name of the shrine, "sua" means tiger, paying respect to the statues here is believed to bring more authoritative power to the worshipper. Apart from Chao Pho Sua, there are also statues of Chinese gods and goddesses like Guan Yu and Kuan-Im whom I am to worship. You can buy an offering in front of the shrine as a donation, which comes with a set of 15 incense sticks and a pair of red Chinese candles.
Bus number 56, takes me to my next stop, Suthat Thepwararam Temple (Wat Suthat). Wat Suthat is located behind a Giant Swing (Sao Chingcha), opposite Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. People believe that paying homage at Wat Suthat will bring them a good vision and charm. Flowers, 3 incense sticks, and a candle are the set offering for the 800 year-old Buddha image of Phra Si Sakyamuni. Wat Suthat Thepwararam is also famous for having the tallest vihara, Sukhothai period’s Buddha image of Phra Si Sakyamuni, and the exquisite vihara doors created and carved by King Rama II. What I like most in Wat Suthat is that they provide a Buddist sermon two times a day at 12pm and 7pm for those who are interested in practicing the dharma. I took a last look at Wat Suathat, at a row of shining gold seated Buddha images then I hastily move to the next sacred place.

Paying Homage to Nine Sacred Temples in Bangkok (Part 1)
According to a proverb “a good start is a part of success,” people take advantage of special events such as a birth day or New Year day to gain good luck and get off to a good start. As Thais strongly believe in Buddhism, one of the most popular things to do to gain good blessings is making merit and donating at temples or paying homage to sacred place like temples and shrines in order to gain luck, and clean their spirit.
Together with Thai superstitious belief, Thai devotees see that paying homage to nine temples in a day will bring prosperity and good luck for their lives. Why it should be nine? The reason is that Thais pronounce number nine as “Kao” like the word “Kao” which means to progress and to step up. Therefore, belief in Buddhism and superstition is combined and worshipping nine sacred places will bring success and prosperity to the devotees.
Because Bangkok is the capital of Thailand where many of our important temples are situated, the city is famous for its Nine Sacred Temple tour. Our passage for paying homage to nine sacred places in Bangkok begins at Wat Kanlayanamit for a belief that Luang Phor Samporkong will bless pilgrims with a safe trip and pleasant encounters along their way. Wat Kanlayanamit and the Buddha image of Phra Puttatrairattanayok, also known as Samporkong to Thai-Chinsese people, was built during the reign of King Rama III and influenced by Chinese architecture. The gambrel of the ordination hall is decorated in floral patterns of a Chinese-style mosaic.

Chiang Mai Panda Cub to Named on August 12
The female panda cub born at Chiang Mai zoo last month will soon have a name after more than 300 different suggestions were submitted in a national naming contest.
The 20-day old panda cub is reported to be in excellent health, having put on more than 650 grams (1.44 pounds) since it was born and now being nursed full-time by it’s mother, Lin Hui.
The committee set up to oversee the naming of the new cub said it received over 300 names on more than 560,000 postcards submitted by the public in the last few weeks.
The four names selected are:
Kwan Thai – a Thai expression meaning, “darling of the Thai people".
Lin Bing – Chinese for "a forest of ice". The word bing is also very similar in Chinese pronunciation to "ping", the name of Chiang Mai's major river.
Tai Jin – meaning "Thai gold" but can also refer to the Thai-Chinese relationship as “jin” is the Thai way of saying China.
Ying Ying – Chinese for "prosperity", while in Thai “ying” means girl.

Wat Rong Khun - White Temple of Northern Thailand
The city of Chiang Rai in northernmost Thailand is one of the remaining areas where traditional Thai art and culture flourish. Located near the city of Chiang Rai, about 5 kilometers to the south, is the beautiful Wat Rong Khun or White Temple. The White Temple of Northern Thailand has become a national landmark and, as one of the most recognizable temples in the country, attracts an increasingly large number of visitors every year.
Wat Rong Khun is unique from other temples in that it has been constructed entirely in a radiant white color with sparking reflections from mirrored glass mosaics embedded in the white plaster. The temple is the idea of Mr. Chalermchai Kositpipat, one of Thailand’s most renowned artists, who wanted to build a temple all in white to signify the purity of Lord Buddha. The artist continues to puts his religious belief and desire to enrich Buddhism in Thailand into his contemporary art design. The construction of the White Temple is Khun Chalemchai’s master work, which he refers to as an offering to Lord Buddha and his beloved country.

Macabre Thai Ceremony - Pu Sae - Ya Sae Ceremony in Chiang Mai
Pu Sae - Ya Sae Ceremony is one among several macabre Thai ceremonies. Held in Chiang Mai annually every May or early June, at the beginning of the rainy season (in 2009 the ceremony will be held on June 7), the ceremony of Pu Sae Ya Sae is believed to predate the beginning of Buddhism in Northern Thailand.
Legend says that both Pu Sae and Ya Sae were cannibals and especially took great pleasure in human flesh, so the gruesome ceremony of Pu Sae – Ya Sae is tied to the legend of these cannibals.
To satisfy and honor the spirit of Pu Sae - Ya Sae, people in Chiang Mai built shrines for them; one at Ban Tin Doi on the foot of Doi Suthep and another on the foot of Doi Kham in Tambon Mae Hia where the ceremony is held every year. The ceremony ritually sacrifices a buffalo and makes offerings at the beginning of each rainy season.

Thailand's Safari Park & Open Zoo in Kanchanaburi

Phi Ta Khon Festival in Loei – Thailand Ghost Festival
As the most well-known event of Loei province in the Northeastern Thailand, Phi Ta Khon is the ultimate yearly celebration. The Thailand Ghost Festival is well regarded as an annual event where revelers put on rather hilarious, yet ghostly, masks made of bamboo and wicker and join in the Ghost parade. Regarded as a rain-making ceremony, this spooky festivity is held annually in the beginning of rainy season. This year the event will be held on 26-28 June at Dan Sai District of Loei province. Unlike Halloween, the ghosts and poltergeists in Phi Ta Khon seek their fun under full daylight.
Phi Ta Khon is a well-blended event between making merit, having a party, and reenacting the long-relayed folklore of King Vessandorn, the Buddha-to-be reincarnation. Buddhist legend has it that the townspeople were angry that the charitable King gave away two precious white elephant to another King who asked for them. They then forcibly put him into exile. The angels and spirits in the forest admired his unconditional generosity so they formed a procession to escort him back to rule the town. The townspeople became overjoyed with his epiphany and so, legend has it, the Phi Ta Khon celebration has its origins.

Khao Sok national park in southern Thailand remains one of the most unique and beautiful areas in Thailand. Khao Sok Park, one of the largest tracts of virgin rain forest remaining in southern Thailand, is believed by some people to be older and more diverse than even the rain forests in the Amazon River Basin.
Khao Sok park is readily accessible either from Surat Thani (located to the east) or from Phuket to the South. Despite the convenient location, Khao Sok is largely passed-over by many tourists who are often more inclined to travel to the more popular resort areas. This works to the favour of this beautiful park as there are not crowds of people and the area can be enjoyed in all of its unspoiled natural splendour.

Thailand's Unique Transportation - Tuk Tuk
What is a Tuk-Tuk?
Come to Thailand for a Tuk-Tuk Ride and Find Out
What are the must do things to do upon arrival in Thailand? In fact there are many and it is probably a good idea to start a list. Near the top of that list, I recommend that you write down “Take a Ride on a Tuk-Tuk” as a must-do experience. But just what is a tuk-tuk?
The tuk-tuk is a three -wheeled small motor tricycle that is very popular for short distance street travel in Thailand. There are about 7,000 tuk-tuks in service in Bangkok alone and there are about 30,000 around the country, mainly used in cities and tourist destinations such as Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Surat Thani, Koh Samui, and Had Yai, just to name a few. The name “Tuk-Tuk” comes from the sound of the engine while operating. How simple is that? The tuk-tuk can run on gasoline, natural gas (NGV) or electricity. The electric version of the tuk-tuk is called Arun Sawasdi tuk-tuk.
Touring around on a tuk-tuk is one of the best ways to experience Thai city life; allowing you to take in the sights, sounds, smells and sensations that make city life such an exciting experience. I suggest you take a ride on a tuk-tuk and explore the capital city of the Land of Smiles, Bangkok (Krung Thep in Thai) the City of Angels. This will surely be an unforgettable experience.

Sustainable Agriculture: Happiness of Living
Sustainable agricultural and organic farming is an alternative way to live life, preserve a culture, and protect nature in Northern Thailand.
Ek-ii-aek-aekkk…the Thai language call of the roosters aroused me from my warm, comfortable mattress. I can glimpse the sun beams seeping through the walls and under the wooden door. I can sense chilly, white fog of the Thailand winter while walking downstairs to help my host mother prepare vegetables to sell at market.
“You seem sleepy. Why don’t you go back to your bed and sleep longer?”Mae Ratri asked gently. Mae in this instance means ‘mother’ and is the way to address ones host mother; for about 2 weeks I was very blessed to have Mae Ratri Kruengngern’s as my surrogate mother.
Mae Ratri and her family are a rural farming family in Mae Tha, an idyllic green village in Northern Thailand. I was part of a group of university students studying sustainable agriculture and as inviting as the offer of extra sleep sounded, I was much more excited to continue with another day of learning.
Mae Tha is a small community of Mae-On sub-district in Chiang Mai, located amidst the mountains on the boundary of Lamphun province. Most of the population speaks the “Yong” dialect or the Thai language.
Mae Tha villagers earn a living by farming rice and cultivating indigenous vegetables using organic and sustainable practices...Click here to read more

Another Hidden Heaven: Ang Thong Marine National Park
It is a wonderful day, the day after our journey to Ratchaprapa Dam. We have come back to the same old bus station at Surat Thani and this time we have another escape planned with a relaxing weekend on the gulf islands and at Ang Thong Marine National Park, the splendid Gulf of Thailand archipelago located northeaset of Surat Thani.
To get to Ang Thong the bus first takes us due east along the Gulf of Thailand coastline for about 85 Kilometers, from Surat Thani city to Donsak. At Donsak we then board a ferry for the 60 kilometer journey to Samui Island, more commonly referred to as Koh Samui.
As soon as we get to the island our bags are all carried to our guesthouse while we hurry to catch yet another boat; this time a taxi-boat destined for Ang Thong archipelago.
We enjoy yet another nice day with scenery of vast calm sea and green dots of islands all along the 35-kilometer boat ride. Then a small pier looms closer and we know we are arriving at Wua Talab Island in the Ang Thong archipelago.

Ratchaprapa Dam: A Hidden Heaven in Surat Thani
It was a beautiful morning when we got to Surat Thani bus station in the Surat Thani province about 650 kilometers south of Bangkok. Above us hanged a sign “to Ratchaprapa Dam and Khao Sok National Park” - the destination of our natural escape holiday.
The bus trip took us due west on highway Route 401, or the Surat Thani-Takua Pa road. The bus then veered right at about kilometer stone 57 onto Route 109. Then about 12 kilometers after leaving Highway 401, it was already time to get off of the bus.
Our experienced bus driver took less than one and a half hours to travel from Surat Thani to the edge of Ratchaprapa Dam, a beautiful and surreal place that is often likened to the incredible “Guilin” landscapes in southern China.
As soon as we had a chance to load our belongings onto a rented long-tailed boat we were able to enjoy the astonishing elegance of the dam itself and crystal clear waters of the reservoir.
Ratchaprapa Dam or Chiao Lan reservoir was built in 1982 under the supervision of Khao Sok National Park and Provincial Electricity Authority to provide hydro-electricity to Surat Thani city and other nearby towns....
